But seriously, this is us in ‘Brain & Life’ magazine

It still is a bit surreal for Jennifer and me to see the October-November issue of Brain & Life magazine on our end table.

Sure, we subscribe to this official publication of the American Academy of Neurology, but there is something special about this specific issue with This Is Us actress Mandy Moore on the cover. There’s a four-page feature story about interabled couples in it that includes us and our story.

See what we mean by surreal?

The article “Conscious Coupling” sets the stage with this introduction:

“When one partner has a disability and the other doesn’t, or both partners have disabilities, the relationship may face challenges. These couples share how they deal with them.”

Jennifer and I were truly humbled with the author Jordan Reed reached out to us to gauge our interest in sharing our perspectives on how we handle life as caregivers for each other and dealing with our different levels of abilities. We quickly responded with a wholehearted, “Absolutely!”

And so, through a series of online and on-the-phone conversations, we offered an inside look at our relationship and life as a couple taking on MS together.

What made this such an amazing experience went beyond the life we’ve created for ourselves in Michigan. It’s that our experiences are included with those of two other interabled couples – one lives in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, and the other splits their time between Australia and Tucson, Arizona – and we collectively are bringing awareness to disabilities in relationships.

Oh yeah, and the fact that our story is included in the issue with Mandy Moore on the cover makes it pretty cool too.

Read the article to learn more about how we are making our life as an interabled couple work.
