Believe it or not, “You look so good” is anything but a compliment for a lot of people who are living with Multiple Sclerosis. We understand why this has the potential to undermine and discredit the overwhelming challenges we are facing. Nobody else can see them so they don’t really exist, right?
Wrong.
Still, is there some value in accepting it as exactly that: a compliment on your outward appearance? So what do you think? Do you take it as a compliment or an insult when you hear these words
In this episode, we debate the pros and cons of what is being said and why it may actually be better than the alternative of people saying things like, “Yeah, you look like you’re living with a chronic disease.”
And we pose a different perspective: Rather than being offended, should we instead be empathetic and offer others the same level of understanding we expect of them?
I have two responses to this comment, depending on my mood. “Thank you, I wish I felt as good as I look.” or “Thank you, but don’t judge a book by it’s cover.”
These are great, Andrea! We will have to remember to use them. They’re very honest yet not off-putting at the same time. Thanks for checking in and thanks for listening to our podcast 🙂
