My grays deserve the salon treatment too

Dan carefully placed the bottle of Matrix Total Results Color Care shampoo upside down in the shower this morning. It is balanced leaning in the corner, trying to drain all of its final contents.

I asked him if I should call RaChelle to get a new bottle of shampoo, knowing full well that she wouldn’t be there to answer my call.

RaChelle is my hairstylist and has been for at least five years. Along with being my stylist, she is a part owner of Salon 3Twelve, a very nice, stylish and handicapped accessible hair salon here in Mt. Pleasant. Salon 3Twelve is just one of many hair salons across the country that have temporarily closed in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus, thus I knew I couldn’t order the product.

It has been nearly nine weeks since my last hair appointment with RaChelle. When I was there, I created this video. Why the video of how I get my hair colored? It’s because I know that handicap accessibility is important.

Salon 3Twelve gets that too.

It is an easy-to-navigate salon, with an entrance flush to the street—no pesky stairs. Each stylist’s chair can be moved, allowing plenty of room to accommodate a wheelchair. And while the salon’s wash bowl station has chairs attached it, there still is enough room to move around it to allow a wheelchair user to have her (or his) hair washed. Beauty accessible to all! Which is very important.

Ironically just yesterday, RaChelle posted a message on Facebook reassuring her clients that hair salons across the country will reopen eventually. It was a hopeful message for those of us badly needing long-overdue salon services and hair products.

Her message also gave clients tips on how to help themselves and the salon to navigate in a new “normal” COVID-19 world. We all need to accept this reality and slowly start to move forward. I appreciated her post and look forward to the day we safely can be together again cutting, coloring and styling hair.

But until that day comes, I will do my best. Try to tame my overgrown locks. Ignore the gray hairs. Settle and be grateful to use Dan’s shampoo, all while my grays and I look forward to seeing RaChelle soon.
