With 50, you get cake too

Just like that, Dan’s 50th birthday celebration is over.

I had secretly stressed, fretted and worried about throwing him a surprise party for the past few months. I sent numerous texts and social media messages to friends and family about cards, menus and decorations all in the hopes of creating an epic milestone memory.

Other than Dan and my recent bouts with Covid on September 24 — his actual birthday — every moment of Dan’s birthday party weekend that took place three weeks later was perfection.

Quite the celebration worthy of Dan turning 50.

Here’s a look at some of the scenes (thanks to our friend Peggy Brisbane for capturing these moments!) from #OPERATIONEPIC.

I worked with our pastor, Dana Hendershot, to invite Dan and me to lunch to get him out of the house so our close friends had time to sneak in and decorate to surprise him when we got home. Looks like it worked, right? 😉

Dan described the moment as “surreal” when he came into the kitchen and saw everyone who showed up to surprise him.
Some of his nearest and dearest gather in the dining room to eat cake and be merry.

One of the biggest surprises for Dan was that his sister, Dawn, her husband, Mike, and daughter, Elizabeth, drove all night from Iowa to spend his birthday weekend with us.

Dan often talks about making things “epic.” And that is what I tried to do with the help of family and friends.
Best thing to happen in 1972? Why, Dan Digmann, of course!!

  1. Congrats Dan! Well done Jen! The party looked epic…except for the U of M shirts in the early pictures (according to this Ohio State grad).
    Welcome to your fifth decade!
